Enola Holmes and the Case of the Missing Marquess (Enola Holmes #1)

BOOKLANDIA GIFT RECOMMENDATION!

I picked up this book for two reasons. The most important one was that I bought it as a gift for my nine-year-old niece and secondly, I loved the movie. Long story short, this book has entered a hollowed and rare ranking, by joining Stardust by Neil Gaiman as being a book whose movie was better.

Do not get me wrong, this book was great. It was delightful, educational, adorable, feminist, and historical, but the movie fleshed all the good bits of the book out even further. Having seen the movie and now read this book, it has made me want to jump and read book 2, to see if some of what I was missing ended up in there.

Because my niece is a tentative reader still, I wanted to read this book in case she needed some hyping up. But as I read through I realized she may want some support while reading it, so I put together a very roughshod info packet that included: how to pronounce “marquess,” what a bustle is, misogyny in the 19th century, and a breakdown of historical British money, which as an adult was very informative!

I would recommend this book (and the movie, obviously) to any middle-grade readers in your life, but be prepared for some questions! -Ford
