The Witches are Coming by Lindy West

Lindy West is always a good time. I mean that. Every one of her books has me laugh-weeping. She’s always funny, irreverent in the best way, with really well-structured story-telling. I picked up this book because someone posted the quote about the trumpet and I needed to know everything about that story.

Having said all of that, I hope this book is in the sale bin soon. Not because it’s bad, but because a lot of the subject matter is very topical to 2018-2019. Topical in a way I would love to see fade into “bad history”. Topical in a way that I know will not.

The essays are full of politics, racism, fat-shaming, and bullying, thrust upon the world by ugly people (and I mean that as a comment on someone’s soul). The essays are also full of laughs, personal growth, and perseverance.

Lindy West shows you the fetid underbelly of the world, while she shines beautifully not because of it, or in spite of it, but independent of its nastiness. Her joy at life, at the moments and people that matter is the reason to read her books. She is a treasure. We are lucky to be alive while she is writing. -Sky
